Bar Basso

Milan

Bar Basso is a historic bar in Milan, Italy, recognisable by its red sign. Food & Wine calls it the birthplace of the Negroni Sbagliato and describes it as a 79-year-old institution.

Food & Wine names Bar Basso the winner, No. 1, of its Global Tastemakers 2026 list of the best global bars. The magazine says its importance is hard to overstate and stresses how little the room has changed over the decades. It describes the bar as a long-standing meeting point for Milan's design world, where designers, artists and fashion people gather before and after shows.

According to the story Food & Wine retells, owner Mirko Stocchetto once topped a Negroni with sparkling wine instead of gin, creating the Sbagliato. Granite floors, chandeliers, salmon-coloured walls and polished wood remain, and bartenders still wear white shirts and ties. The menu lists more than 500 drinks, from Alaskas and Pimm's Cups to Planter's Punches and Gimlets, served with free bowls of chips and olives.
