Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey, in the United States. It was founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey, which makes it the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the country and one of the nine colonial colleges. It moved to Newark in 1747 and to Princeton nine years later, and took the name Princeton University when it became a university in 1896.

Times Higher Education ranks Princeton No. 3 in its World University Rankings 2027 and 2026. CWUR places it No. 6 in its 2026 and 2025 editions, which score education, employability, faculty and research. ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities puts it No. 6 in 2026 and No. 7 in 2025.

Princeton's endowment of $42.3 billion is the largest per student in the United States. About 9,000 students study on its 600-acre main campus, and the university manages the Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. As of October 2025, 81 Nobel laureates, 16 Fields Medalists and 17 Turing Award laureates had been affiliated with Princeton, and two U.S. presidents and twelve Supreme Court justices are among its alumni. According to its admission office, 30% of undergraduates pay nothing to attend.
