Finland

Finland (the Republic of Finland) is a Nordic state in Northern Europe that borders Sweden, Norway and Russia. Its capital and largest city is Helsinki, and it has a population of 5.7 million. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages.

The 2026 edition of the World Happiness Report, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford with Gallup and the UN SDSN, ranks Finland No. 1, with a life evaluation score of 7.764, averaged over 2023–2025. The report rates how people evaluate their own lives and relates the scores to factors such as healthy life expectancy, social support, income per head, generosity, perceived corruption and the freedom people feel to make life choices.

Boreal forest covers most of the country, which has more than 180,000 recorded lakes. Finland became part of Sweden in the 13th century, was taken by Russia in 1809 and made an autonomous grand duchy, and declared independence after the Russian Revolution of 1917. A civil war followed the next year.
