Settlement in the area goes back more than 6,400 years, and the town was founded by the Romans, who called it Turicum. In 1519 Zurich became a leading centre of the Protestant Reformation under Huldrych Zwingli. Today the city has Switzerland's biggest and busiest airport and railway station, and according to the Global Financial Centres Index 2026 the city leads continental Europe as a financial and insurance centre. It is also home to ETH Zurich, the Swiss National Museum, the Kunsthaus and the Schauspielhaus Zürich.
