The city covers about 302.6 square miles and is made up of five boroughs, among them the Bronx and Staten Island, its southernmost borough, reached by ferry. As of October 2026 the city government is led by Mayor Mamdani.

Time Out, which surveyed more than 24,000 locals for its 2026 list of the best cities in the world, ranks it No. 5, after placing it No. 3 in its 2025 edition.

The city draws close to 60 million tourists a year, more than 12 million of them from abroad, according to NYC Reviewed, with sights such as the Empire State Building and Times Square. Its climate is humid subtropical with four distinct seasons. The city's tourism board highlights its theatre scene, including Off-Broadway shows, and the food of the five boroughs.
