Narita International Airport (IATA: NRT), originally called New Tokyo International Airport, serves the Greater Tokyo Area. It is in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, about 60 km east of central Tokyo. The airport covers about 1,137 hectares and is being expanded to roughly double that area.
Skytrax ranked Tokyo Narita No. 5 in its World's Top 100 Airports in both 2025 and 2026. The passages from the Skytrax list are ranking tables and give no further comment on the airport.
Narita's construction was highly controversial: building it without the consent of many landowners led to the Sanrizuka Struggle, a long series of protests. Of five planned runways only two were built, some private land remains inside the airport, and a night curfew bans flights between midnight and 6 a.m. For many years Narita was Japan's busiest airport for international passengers and cargo, handling 33.4 million international passengers in 2018.
