Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and the seat of its Parliament. It is the country's oldest city, the capital and largest city of the Western Cape, and South Africa's second-most populous city after Johannesburg. The city lies on Table Bay and is known for its harbour, Table Mountain and Cape Point.
Time Out ranked Cape Town No. 1 in its 50 Best Cities in the World to Visit in 2025. Its local writers list African penguins, fine wines, Blue Flag beaches and views from Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, as things that can be enjoyed in a single day. Condé Nast Traveller (UK) readers placed it No. 3 in the Readers' Choice Awards 2025, with a score of 95.28, praising its cultural richness, beaches, vineyards and rooftop bars, and noting the small time difference with the UK.
Table Mountain National Park lies within the city limits, along with other nature reserves and marine protected areas. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden contains five of South Africa's six biomes. According to Wikipedia, Cape Town has been named the world's best city several times, including by The New York Times in 2014 and by The Telegraph every year from 2017 to 2025.
